was born, the gardener planted a bay-tree in commemoration. In process of time, Edward's regiment was in great peril in India, and there were great fears at home for his safety. When he returned safe and sound, a feast was given to all the retainers. When his health was drunk, the old gardener craved to say a word :—" He had never had no fears for Master Edward so long as he saw the bay-tree green. For did not the Bible say, have seen the- wicked flourish like a green bay-tree.' "—I am, Sir, &c.,
