Off Beaten Tracks in Brittany. By Emil Davies. (Stephen Swift

and Co. 7s. 6d. net.)—This book is in many ways inge- nious and agreeable. If it is not particularly original, neither is it quite like those unbearably dull and trivial "books of travel" which are read for no other reason than that they sup- plement the "Guide Michelin" or Murray. The book is, indeed, cleverly written, and has occasional flashes of wit, though the reader too frequently stumbles against such phrases as "my lady friends," used in no ironical sense. Indeed, had one unpleasant incident been omitted, and had this particular type of phrase been expunged, the book might have been described as an entertaining example of travel literature.
