The effect of the victory was instantaneous. On Tuesday Sir

Douglas Haig reported that the enemy was retreating along practi- cally our whole battle-front. He was evacuating Lens itself. On Wednesday our troops forced the passage of the Tortille and the Canal du Nord on a wide front between Peronne and Havrincourt, and also, coming from the north, broke into the rear of the Mceuvres redoubt on the Hindenburg line.
