Palestine

The situation in Palestine has calmed down considerably since we wrote last week. In the background there is some hazy fear of an Arab concentration under Ibn Saud, and the frontiers are being carefully guarded against raiders from both Transjordan and Syria. The Colonial Office has appointed a Commission to inquire into the " immediate causes " of the outbreak in Pales- tine. Sir Walter Shaw, late Chief-Justice of the Straits Settlements, is Chairman. Sir John Chancellor, the High Commissioner of Palestine, who has returned to his post, has published a grave warning to rioters, and numerous arrests have been made, especially of Arabs.
