Sir: Martyn Harris is mistaken in stating (Arts, 31 August) that I was one of the sharp young Oxbridge men hired by Grace Wyndham Goldie for Panorama and Tonight.

In fact I was rejected by Mrs Goldie when I approached BBC TV. That was in 1954. Later, in 1959, it was Leonard Miall, head of her department, who invited me to join Panorama after my four years with ITN. What is the point of writing memoirs (Grand Inquisitor: Pan £4.99) if even the brighter TV critics apparently don't read them?

More seriously, I have never worn a 'drainpipe suit'. And neither Michael Pea- cock nor Huw Wheldon was an Oxbridge man. Both were graduates of LSE. Peacock was certainly both 'sharp' and 'young', but Wheldon was neither.

Incidentally, the question put by me to Mr Heath (which Martyn Harris refers to) was in a Panorama of 24 years ago, not 15 years ago. See p 269 of my book.
