From Mr James Noble Sir: The combination of Jan Morris's

ludicrous praise of the Welsh Ca courteous race, all too anxious to please', 'practising their harps') with her denigration of the English (who like 'pot noodles and crisps') is beyond belief. My experience of Wales on holiday is of a people who switch into Welsh as soon as English people enter the room. The idea that the great majority of Welsh play the harp and go to Eisteddfods could only be conceived by someone who has never visited South Wales. In the meantime, the English are supposed to leave their money and `go home'; this is somehow not racist, because it is a matter of 'cultural survival'. Firstly, the English, even if none of them goes to Wales, do leave their money in the form of massive subsidies through central government. Secondly, all racism is defended on the grounds of cultural hegemony.
