SIR,—The translation from the Latin quoted by Sir Herbert Maxwell in the Spectator of December 1st was written by the

Rev. John Chandler, for many years vicar of Witley, Surrey, and is as follows:—

" Tho' thou art Death's own counterpart, sweet Sleep, Still on my bed thy watch I pray thee keep,

Oh, 'neath thy witching power how good to lie Thus without life to live, thus without death to die."
