Whiff of La Dolce Vita

From The Count Capponi Sir: What is lacking in Tobias Jones's book (Books, 25 January) is a more truthful description of Italian politics. No mention is made, so it seems, of the Mafia-like Italian judiciary, in the service of the former communists, which is trying to upset a properly elected government with trumped-up charges and rigged trials. Berlusconi and his majority are defending themselves by passing laws that will prevent this coup d'etat. We all know that Berlusconi is vulgar, but the majority of Italians voted for him because they were tired of the nanny state and the suffocatingly 'politically correct' rule of the Left. We wanted a whiff of freedom. The Left and the centre-Left have ruled us for 50 years; the mess is their doing.

By the way, Berlusconi's football club is not Juventus, but Milan: the fans of the two teams are hitter enemies.
