On Monday the caucus of moderate Liberals at Manchester came

to a noble resolution,—to support Tories, and of Tories accordingly they have since been in search. Mr. Murray Glad- stone and the Mayor of Manchester have declined the request to stand. Mr. E. James, Q.C., seems to be now the only Conser- vative candidate, and it is said that the intention of the moderates is to put Mr. Abel Heywood at the head of the poll, in the hope of disgusting Manchester permanently with the extreme party. They are more likely, and certainly deserve better, to disgust Man- chester permanently with themselves. Such cynical tactics as these always lead to confusion.
