Passages of a Working Life. By Charles Knight. Vol. III.

(Brad- bury and Evans.)—This volume Mr. Knight calls the third epoch. It commences in the summer of 1844, and comes down to the present time, a pleasant, gossiping narrative of the social progress of the country and the author's own literary plans and achievements. Mingled with a deal of kindly criticism both of events and persons, this makes an essentially readable book. Sometimes we think Mr. Knight is too fond of allusion merely, which is intelligible enough now to middle-aged men, but twenty years hence will be altogether lost.
