Empires aren't for us

From Mr W. Picou Sir: While Paul Gottfried (`Cheese-eating surrender monkeys', 1 June) may harbour fantasies of an 'American empire', few of my fellow citizens, let alone fellow conservatives, have any desire or interest in the responsibilities of empire. If Mr Gottfried is unable to distinguish a Tax Americana' (successor to the 'Pax Britannica) from empire, his discernment is impaired. The majority of Americans don't care that much about the self-inflicted stupidities of the rest of the world — if you want to live under some sort of Islamo-fascist totalitarianism, go right ahead.

Mr Gottfried is quick to remind us that 'America would never have achieved her independence had it not been for French military might' (a somewhat suspect reading of history), but conveniently forgets whom that 'military might' was deployed against (hint: one of our closest allies). He also ignores the fact that the French have had their chestnuts pulled from the fire twice in the last 100 years — by my counting, that's a two-for-one deal.
