Taxing times

From air G. Marshall Sir: Conservative councillors throughout the country will recognise the truth of Ross Clark's exposure of the government's latest tax scam Of it's Tory, tax it', 1 March). But it isn't just Tory councils in the South that have been targeted. Macclesfield Borough (population 150.000), which has been Tory controlled for ever, was awarded a measly increase of £56.000 in the revenue support grant settlement. Neighbouring Crewe, with a smaller population but a Labour council. got an increase of £505,000. The result is that the residents of Crewe will face no increase in the District Council part of their council tax this year. The residents of Macclesfield, on the other hand, will have to pay an additional 9.9 per cent. The local loony left newspaper will ensure that it is 'that nice Tory in the suit' who gets the blame. As with all great scams, the beauty of this one lies in its breath-taking simplicity.
