The Newcastle and Gateshead Shipowners Society met specially on Wednesday

last, to consider a petition to the House of Commons deprecating the Government proposal to increase the present duties on Colonial timber, as "highly injurious to the interests of the British shipowner." The petition was adopted. The Chartists made their appearance, and carried their standing resolution without opposition. The motion, however, to tack it to the petition was rejected ; but only by a majority of ten.
