A long weekend: the very thought of one of these rare events in our calender conjures up in my imagination a period given to lecherous and baccanalian pursuits. Alas! the last such holiday was not to be spent in this manner. Uncle George passed away on Thursday and was buried on Saturday. A few relations were in attendance, but several, whom I believe had a sniff of what the will contained, were conspicuously absent.

Saturday was thus followed by a day of recovery and on Monday I had regained enough energy to go to the Plumpton Races. The event was spoilt by the ridiculously small number of runners in each race. Also I managed to make the wrong selections.

Thus, so obviously disgruntled, I contacted my broker, Wotherspool, on the first day of the new week. Secretly I had hoped that with the market so flat he would be also be depressed. The message from his secretary however, told another story: " I am afraid Mr

Wotherspool is visiting clients in Scotland today sir."

I was thus left to my own de,' vices on the investment front On in a brutal frame of mind vises ready to trim back many of my In' vestments. For a start Unoch. rome, that laggard which so badlY let me down with very poor In terim profits, has to leave my Part folio. Next is Kamunting. This WI share which I bought in the expectation of rationalisation of the London Tin investments, has 4100 failed to perform in the short term. and I am suspicious abat the short-term future of the CO modity. Another commodity'. based company, Guthrie, ilf!,,5 done me very well in the year !" which I have held the shares. Here again I feel that with commod0 prices probably on the decline ItIS time to consider selling eV° though Guthrie should continue to see above average growth.

Looking at other shares in portfolio I am very pleased WitP Stoddard Holdings which Pr°. duced the sort of profit I was hor ing for. Even now it looks under. valued. With the proceeds of !TlY sales this week I am again 01 for a share selling at a below aye'. age rating. This is Henry Foster, a builders' merchant. The other 0,1d. traction is the possibility of a.b,1 from one of the hungry ma1„9' such as London and Northern curities.
