Einstein's military insight

From Lieutenant Colonel D.M.C. Rose Sir: Albert Einstein said that to keep trying the same thing over and over with the expectation of a different result is the definition of insanity.

The Mitchell Commission's initiative is the latest elite-sponsored effort to stop the fighting between Israelis and Palestinians. As it unravels, those trying to find a way out of the horror would do well to ponder Einstein's insight and try something different.

In a traditional ceasefire, generals order their troops to stop fighting, and under pain of court martial that is what they do. In the Middle East today, however, that military chain of command, especially on the Palestinian side, does not exist. This is more a war between two peoples than between two armies. It follows that for a ceasefire to work, both communities must come to feel invested in it.
