Eire referendum

Sir: There is to be a referendum in Ireland (Eire) about the Article in the Constitution (Article 44) which states "the special position of the Catholic Church in Ireland." Your correspondent Patrick Cosgrave states: " I could find no one who would say with any confidence that Mr Lynch will succeed in having the clause expunged" (November 25). Who on earth was he talking to?

I will say with confidence and will put my money where my mouth is by offering to pay £50 to Mr Cosgrave's favourite charity (if he has one) if more than 25 per cent of the valid poll oppose the proposition which is backed by all three political parties.

This is farcical reporting. It is either arrogance or ignorance but it is harmful to the cause of peace in Ireland.

I would suggest that Mr Cosgrave's stake is the fee for his misleading article which I trust is a good deal less than £50.
