For and against

Sir: Kenneth Hurren is the only critic who makes me laugh out loud, even when cruelly wrong_ — as he surely is about the National Theatre's Cherry Orchard (June 2). I don't believe Michael Blakemore's production deserves Mr Hurren's jocular advice on how to end it. though I concede I was convulsed by the idea of old Firs being clobbered by a falling -cherry tree. Mr Hurren's views on No, No Nanette and Dame Anna also provided mirthful reading. But if he hates Gypsy, too, I shall never forgive him.
