Sir: Perhaps if Mr Balmforth (September 2) lived in Southall

or Wolverhampton or Bradford or Slough, rather than in Woking, he would be more concerned about promises made to the British electorate at the time of the last election than about promises made of which the British electorate were at the time totally ignorant.

I "am referring of course to the promise of Mr Heath two years ago to limit Commonwealth immigration and the granting of British passports to East African Asians.

For too long successive British governments have blatantly ignored the wishes and interests of the average man and woman in this country. The consequences of Douglas-Home's decision will not be suffered by him in his retirement in Coldstream, but by present and future generations in areas where immigration has already thrown an intolerable strain on all the amenities and created acute social problems.

The 'silent majority' of average Englishmen and Englishwomen, be they 'little ' or not, will not stay silent much longer, Race Relations Act or no.
