Woolly pears
From Victoria Glendinning Sir: Leah McLaren ('The tragic ineptitude of the English male', 27 July) has, after only a few months in this country, come to some dire conclusions about the English man's lack of libido. All she needs to do, to obtain a better result, is to broaden her research base. She seems to be consorting exclusively with etiolated examples of the former ruling class, who represent so small a proportion of the total male population as to be statistically insignificant. It's as if she were to condemn all fruit after tasting nothing but woolly pears. The late, great psycho-analyst Dr Christopher Scott used to say that there were two categories of people whom he could never help: very young prostitutes, and Old Etonians.
