Illustrations to Bunyan's Progress. By Frederick T. Shields.

(Simpkin, Marshall, and Co.)—A very charming volume, perhaps rather more extravagant in the matter of margin to the illustrations than is necessary. The letter-press consists simply of the passages, which are the author's subjects, literally extracted from the Pilgrim's Progress. Mr. Shields's manner seems to be founded rather on the practice of the Ger- man illustrators, and he is perhaps open to the charge of exaggeration in expression. At least, however, this school are never weak, if some- times a little sentimental or coarse. The plate of "Faithful and Wanton," one of Mr. Shields's best, exactly shows what we mean. The whole volume is characterized by great elegance and chastity—not to say severity—of taste.
