Lord Strangford's mission to the Brazils is understood to have
failed ; the Emperor continuing decidedly averse to what are sup- posed to be the wishes of the British Court in regard to the settle- ment of the Government of Portugal.
A mercantile panic prevails at Rio ; which will injure our mer- chants, who in the confidence of peace may have increased their investments in that trade.
