The American tariff has already been three times before the
House of Representatives with a view to its modification. On the last motion, the majority, refusing to refer the consideration of the subject to a Committee, was so great (122 to 51) that all hopes of a change are for the present at an end. The House has, however, adopted some resolutions, unconnected with this measure, which it is supposed will be of much importance to the American mer- chants. Three other new States are about to be added to the Union. The population of the United States has been recently- computed at nearly thirteen millions of souls.
