SACRED HARMONIC SOCIETY.
The Fall of Babylon was performed last night at Exeter Hall, under the direction of Dr. Spohr himself. The hall was filled by a densely crowded audience; who received the illustrious composer, on his appearance in the orchestra, with the honours due to his genius. Several of the choruses were given with power and effect; particularly " The lion roused from slumber," and the grand fugal chorus of Jews which terminates the first part. There was, however, what was to be expected in such difficult music imperfectly rehearsed, a frequent want of firmness in taking up the points of harmony; the voices, in the soft passages, were not sufficiently subdued; and some of the recitatives were rendered very heavy by the manner of their delivery. The execution, however, of this sublime work was on the whole creditable to the Sacred Harmonic Society. Miss Birch, Ms Dolby, Mr. Lockey, and Mr. Phillips, were the principal solo singers.
