THE WELLINGTON MONUMENT.

To the Editor.

.Lirerpool, 5th July 1858. Sin-Have you not misunderstood the intentions of Government respecting the Wellington Monument, as expressed by Lord John Manners ?

As I read the noble lord's remarks, I understood that the execution of the work was to be confided to Mr. Stevens, the designer of the model selected, but that, as it was proposed to erect it in a special " Wellington Chapel " within the Cathedral, it was under consideration whether some additional sculpture could not be appropriately introduced into this chapel, in which case the chief prizeman in the late competition was to be invited to undertake this extra portion of the work.

[The statement in our last number was necessarily founded on the infor- mation communicated to the House of Commons on June 18th, which, as reported in the newspapers, appeared somewhat vague. But the speech of Lord Derby on Friday evening (July 2) affords ground for believing that the view taken by our correspondent is correct -En.]
