Inadmissible review
Sir: Whilst I agree with Sheridan Morley about the poor direction of Inadmissible Evidence at the National (Arts, 26 June) I must take issue with the rest of his review, which appears to be nothing but a further addition to his anti-John Osborne cam- paign. His objection seems to be that only actors such as Nicol Williamson could play Bill Maitland and he blames John Osborne for this. Strange logic indeed. If we see a dreadful production of Hamlet or Macbeth does it follow that we should chastise Shakespeare for writing tricky plays? Sheri- dan Morley's reviews are usually good, but when he bases them upon personal grudges they become far more dull than anything that the National Theatre's directors could produce.
