It is reported that the British Government are hopeful of
a satisfactory conclusion to the London conferences, but we cannot pretend to share this optimism, for at the back of Mr. Griffith and Mr. Collins is Mr. De Valera, who in a speech last week said with complete simplicity and finality : " Mr. Churchill's threats do not affect us "—the "threats" were, of course, Mr. Churchill's excellently lucid explanation of the situation- " we deny the right of any English authority to prescribe what Irishmen shall or shall not do."
