SPEAKING of hydrogen-bomb tests, Mr. John Maynard Smith,. a perspicacious
geneticist from London University, said, 'The effects of what we are doing today will not become apparent for some hundred years, and it will be about five thousand years before half the deaths for which we are responsible will have occurred.' Personally I find it reassuring to know that our responsibility will be over in ten thousand years.
