Sir: Mr Alan Watkins is correct in saying (3 March)

that I was approached about a possible candidature at Pollok. He is incorrect in the form of refusal he attributes to me.

My refusal was immediate and unconditional. although I was grateful for the kindness of those who made the suggestion. I am not a member of the Labour party; and my first loyalty is to the Guardian and its tradition of independence.
