The intelligence of the week from America adds little to
our knowledge of facts. The extent of General Rosecranz's defeat is explained, as appears in another column ; but the moot points whether General Burnside can reach Chattanooga, what supplies Rosecranz has collected, and what is the real number of the Southern army, are still undecided. On the most important of all, General Rosecranz himself affirms that he is able to hold out, and there is much evidence to indicate that the Southern army was greatly exhausted by its victory.
