The Ultramontanes are greatly exercised about the withdrawal of the
Orenoque,' the French man-of-war stationed at Civita Vecchia, to carry away the Pope, if he wished to go. As the Pope himself consented to its going, as he can go anywhere he likes, whenever he likes, and as the Orenoque ' is too rotten to carry him, the passion of the party for symbolism carries them -rather too far. The ' Or4noque ' was intended to symbolise French intention to restore the Temporal power one day, and if the intention is only as strong as its gymbol, Italy has not much to fear.
