It had been stated in the Portuguese papers beforehand that
by arrangement the Government Coalition was to have a hundred and thirty-five seats out of the total of a hundred and fifty-five, and that the three parties composing the Coalition were to have sixty-one, fifty-nine, and fifteen seats respectively. The elections have given the Government a hundred and thirty-eight seats, the Regeneradors, Pro- gressists, and Independents winning, as will be seen, almost exactly the number of seats prophesied for them. But even this, it is alleged, is not the limit of accurate forecasting. It was said that the Radical Opposition would be seven strong; it is seven strong. It was said that five Republicans would be elected, four in Lisbon and one in Beja; five have been elected, four in Lisbon and one in Beja. We take no responsibility for these allegations; but if the Republicans should have real cause to feel that they have been squeezed out by a " cooking " of the elections in the traditional manner, we fear that the Government can hardly look forward to tranquillity in the country.
