In some recent elections in the State of New York,
the Go- vernment, or VAN BUREN party, had been completely defeated. A proclamation by the Governor of Pennsylvania fixed the 13th of August for the resumption of cash payments by the banks in that State. Mr. BIDDLE, and a majority of the banks, had re- solved to put off that measure till the let of January next; but had been disconcerted by the proclamation. It is said that, very
soon, the banks throughout the United States, with the exception of those in Alabama, Mississippi, and Tennessee, will redeem their notes with specie.
