Serb sentiments
Sir: As a traveller in Serbia, who has also reviewed Mrs Kindersley's The Mountains of Serbia for another publication, may I add something to Mr Hingley's review (4 December).
Any ordinary traveller is strongly advised that many places in Serbia are forbidden to tourists; to disobey is to land in unpleasant trouble. Serbia is now an expensive country, even more so than France. The Serbs can tell with their characteristic
shrewdness whether one is able to give presents or even hospitality in the UK and will adjust their hospitality to the visitor accordingly. Of course, in the wilds of Serbia one is helpless unless one knows something of the language. It is obvious that Mrs Kindersley was a privileged, tactful and Serbian-speaking traveller, but quite unaware of what to point out to ordinary travellers.
