COUNTRY LIFE
In Trust
A tract of land of peculiar beauty in the famous Gwynant Valley, along the shores of the lake between Capel Curig and Beddgelert, was put up to auction some little while ago with the following " blurb "attached : " This property represents a splendid opportunity to speculators and investors as it has a very large main road frontage." The threat so alarmed that Welsh patriot, Mr. Clough Williams-Ellis, that he bought some three hundred acres of the wild upland. This piece he has offered as the nucleus of a National Park, going a step further than those beneficent landowners, Lord Astor and Lord Desborough, who " scheduled " their property on the Thames and so saved it from defacement in perpetuity. They did all that was possible in such a place. Other sorts of preservation are opened in the wilds of Snowdonia.
