New pounds

Sir: I note in your issue of December 21 that it is twice suggested by contributors that the adoption of a heavy pound or 'Rentenpound' might be necessary as a preliminary to ending inflation. I suggest a convenient means of doing this would be to issue ten New Pounds for twenty four old pounds. Each New Pound might then readily be divided into twenty shillings of twelve pence each.

In this way we could retain the basic unit of currency, the penny, thereby obviating the expense of a re-coinage. Peter J. Bibbings 17 Highfield Avenue, St Austell, Cornwall
