Britain and Israel
Sir: In your Notebook (4 July)you expressed unease about our anti-PLO demonstration on the ground that there may be differences of opinion among British Jews about whether HM Government should talk to the PLO.
As the elected representative voice of British Jewry, we believe that we have the pulse of our community, which is totally united in its opposition to the PLO, in its support for democracy in Israel and in its belief that good relations between Britain and Israel are essential for both.
Last Sunday's rally was designed to draw the Government's attention to this united approach. And as proof of that unity, 50,000 people, Jews and non-Jews, went to Trafalgar Square to express these views to Lord Carrington at the start of his Presidency of the EEC Council of Ministers.
I hope that you will agree on reflection that what we did was entirely in keeping with the Board's objectives and in the best traditions of British democracy.
