NEWS OF THE WEEK.
THE German chiefs are rapidly carrying out their side of the Treaty. On the receipt of the official documents proving the ratification of the Treaty by the Assembly, the troops in Paris, who for the most part behaved excellently, were withdrawn on Friday week. The Southern forts have been handed over to -the French, the Emperor-King has left Versailles for Ferrieres, 'Count Bismarck has gone to Germany, and by the 24th Versailles will be completely evacuated. The German armies are falling back behind the Seine, and it is believed that within a few weeks the first milliard will have been paid, and the occupation will be reduced to the territory between Rheims and Metz. Even that, however, will be a perpetual irritant and cause of danger for France, as every exercise of authority will be reported with exag- gerations throughout the population. Well may the Crown Prince say—if he does say it—that the terms of peace compro- mise the future of Germany.
