The French Government's pledge to adhere to a Republic will,
it is believed, calm Paris, where the Ultras have retained their cannon, are well armed, and threaten insurrection if the Republic is disowned. They hold Belleville and the heights of Montmartre like fortresses, with barricades, pickets, and all arrangements for a resolute defence. It is said, however, that their leaders dread civil war, that they are afraid of the troops, and that their main object is to retain their war pay of thirty sous a day. By the latest accounts, the Red ardour is cool- ing down, and the cannon will be surrendered, but the crisis will arrive when pay stops.
