A fast ferry to come Sir: Your reader Mr Fyffe's
criticism of the Newhaven-Dieppe ferry service under the former French Railways (SNCF) and British Rail partnership sounds familiar but from a different era (Letters, 4 November).
In spring 1992, Stena Line stepped in to save the route. The improvement that resulted was so marked that in just three- quarters of that year we carried more pas- sengers than the previous operator had ever achieved in a full 12 months.
Since then Stena Line has jointly funded a £40 million redevelopment of Dieppe port facilities and next summer will double the number of sailings offered on the route by adding a fast ferry to the service.
