Censoring ads
Sir: Like your correspondent Mr R. K. Brian I am glad that it is not on the whole the practice of The Spectator to censor advertisements on arbitary moral grounds; nevertheless I do not think that it is right to publish advertisements which indirectly encourage the breaking of the law. For the past few weeks The Spectator has included an advertisement for a 'radar spotter' designed to give motorists advance warning of police speed checks. While approving of anything which enables motorists to drive more safely, I abhor a device such as this which effectively enables motorists to drive more dangerously — and with impunity.
I find this far more shocking than advertisements or articles dealing with sexual matters, controversial political subjects, or with the Royal Family — whether or not I agree with the point of view which they take.
