LETTERS Time for confession
Sir: John Plender's article ('In the name of God, go', 4 September) was fine as far as it went but it could have gone farther. It could have asked: who are the Church Commissioners and who are their chief beneficiaries? The answer to the first ques- tion is — all the diocesan bishops, a num- ber of other senior clergy, and some lay nominees. The answer to the second is all the diocesan bishops and senior and junior clergy. Is there not an element of insider trading when so many non-executive directors of a mismanaged corporation deny responsibility or involvement while continuing to accept salaries and expenses and have their palaces (or at least pretty grand houses) maintained by the offending body? Is there a case here for an updated theology of the stewardship of money and for some sign of penitence and restitu- tion?
