NEWS OF THE WEEK.
WRITING last week when on the surface the pro- spects seemed very dark, we maintained our belief that the Parliament Bill would become law " without the added evil of the creation of 300 or 400 peers, the establish- ment of a Liberal majority in the House of Lords, and the destruction of the peerage as a national institution." Our faith in the ultimate political sagacity of the House of Lords has not been misplaced. On Thursday night by a majority of 17 (131-114) they refused to insist on their amendments. The vote, however, was really a vote for not insisting on a creation of peers.
