The Silver Strand

SIR,—Mr John Wells, in your issue of July 29, praises the Irish Tourist Board for being 'devils for detail.' It is a field in which he might have dabbled himself whilst on his recent visit to Ireland.

How horrifying for a genuine Irishman to read his description of the 'Old [not Auld you will note] Stand' as 'an authentic Irish Pub.' In one phrase Mr Wells has dismissed a generation of tireless effort from men of tempered idealism who have sought to create an English country pub in the heart of Dublin. As for the 'rich murmur of good conversa- tion and Irish wit'—even the most cursory attention to the surroundings would have revealed the raucous laughter of rough English rugby players resident in Trinity College!
