A new morality
Sir: I am deeply grateful for your article 'War Guilt and Lt Calley' (28 November). In my view your argument is unanswerable. The dis- turbing reminder of the basis of the Nuremberg Trials—that the leaders in wars must accept responsibility for war atrocities—makes it un- comfortably clear that your car- toonist could justifiably have in- cluded additional world figures in the dock of his picture.
It is disappointing, however, that you conclude with no rousing lead in the way of a solution. Once it is recognised that Belsens and Dresdens, Dachaus and Hiro- shimas, are essential ingredients of all war, might it not be time, cost what it may, for our country to establish a new world role: and cut our defence (sic) expenditure to the veriest minimum?
