On Monday a most important Order in Council, involving .
momentous changes in the functions of the Secretary of State for War, was published in the London Gazette. The date of the Order is January 27th. The operative part states that " The Chief of the Imperial General Staff "-(i.e., _Sir William Robertson) shall henceforth " be responsible for issuing the • orders of the Government in regard to Military Operations. The. Deputy Chief of the Imperial General Staff shall be respell- bible -for •the performance of such duties of the Department as the Chief of the Imperial General Staff may Assign to him from time to time." This means, of course, that in future orders will go out to commanders in the field in the name of the Chief' of-the General Staff instead of in that of the Secretary of State for War.
