Spectator's Notebook

1 ATE but seriously (which is, of course, the l_dmotto of the Cecils) the Spectator has de-

cided to get into the act. 'Throw its hat in the ring,' is how James Margach would put it. So then, we proudly present the results of our de- tailed investigation into the likely result of the forthcoming election for the position of Leader of the Welsh Parliamentary Liberal Party. We

have been able to canvass every Liberal Mem- ber of Parliament for Welsh constituencies, and this, of course, gives our poll far more authority than those conducted by the'Stinday Times, the Observer and the NOP.

We are able to announce that Mr. Bowen and Mr. Hooson are neck-and-neck. Each of them has one strong supporter. The sensation of the poll is, however, that there is no support at all for Mr. Alasdair Mackenzie. This might at first glance be put down to the facts that he sits for Ross and Cromarty and doesn't Want the job anyway. However, I am in a position to reveal that there are two more substantial objections. It is held against him that he did not serve in the last Parliament, and some of the Liberal Party have been irritated by the fact that they can't understand his speeches. This may be be- cause they are delivered in Gaelic.
