IRELAND.

Dr. William Stokes is appointed her Majesty's physician in Ireland, in the room of the late Sir Henry Marsh.

Mr. A. Brewster, Q.C., while shooting, a few days ago, with Mr. Bernal Osborne, M.P., received the contents of his gun through the palm of one of his hands, and suffered injury of the fore-arm from his ramrod. It is hoped that it may not be necessary to amputate the band.

Mr. Brewster is progressing as favourably as could he expected, there being no symptoms of fever or local inflammation. The wound is not so serious as at first anticipated, and in a few days his complete recovery may be expected.

Two brothers, James and Robert Shaw, were murdered on Thursday week. They resided entirely by themselves, on a farm in the townland of Belderg, about four miles from Monaghan. A person, who had some business to transact with them on Friday week, reached the house about two o'clock. and found the brothers both lying across the threshold of their own door, shot dead. So close was the weapon used, that the skulls were completely eut, and looked as if they had been shattered with a hatchet. A post- mortem examination of the bodies was made by medical men, and they are of opinion that there must have been at least four persons engaged in the murder, as there were both bullet and shot wounds on the heads of the murdered men. Two men are in custody of the police, and are remanded anti! an adjourned meeting of the jury.
