Last Sunday's elections of a third of the French Senate
have resulted in a considerable success for Poineare and his policy. The, condition of the Senate remains almost exactly as it was, that is, perceptibly more Liberal than the Chamber but yet not Liberal enough to dare to breathe a word of criticism of -M. Poincare's foreign policy. The Left is extremely dis- appointed. La vie ch&e, the sudden fall of the franc, the vacillations of the Government's domestic policy, have all failed to shake in the least M. Poineare's position. But if this • result is lamentable it is not unnatural. No one has stood up to France in her attempt to domineer over Europe, and until someone does, she will succeed in doing so, and her Government will retain the prestige of her success.
