Orvvell's sense

Sir: John Casey ('Orwell's silliness', 5 January) duly reminds any uncritical admirers of Orwell that he could some- times get matters out of perspective. So evidently can Mr Casey.

Orwell's most influential works such as Animal Farm and 1984 show that he understood and analysed far more accur- ately than Mr Casey would seem to see the nature of dictatorships of the Left as well as of the Right, then and now. His insight and honesty are unequalled.
