Sir: Carola Oman (5 July) is wrong about both the grandfathers of Sir William Hamil- ton. His mother was the daughter of the Earl not Duke of Abercorn (the dukedom was only created in 1868) and his father was the son of the Earl of Selkirk and his wife Anne. Duchess of Hamilton, not of a Duke of Hamilton.
